Last weekend was the spring show at Windswept. Zoe competed, riding one of her favorite ponys (Leigh) in four classes: Walk/Trot/ Canter Equitation, Walk/Trot/Canter Pleasure, Walk/Trot/Canter Command and the Trail Class. Windswept is a school show in which the majority of the horses live on the farm. Zoe's instructor, Sue, transported two of her horses from her farm to the show so her students could compete. Leigh is a great little pony, but she gets anxious when she away from home, and Zoe learned the hard way that Leigh doesn't like to be too close to horses she does not know. During Zoe's first class, W/T/C Equitation, when the horses and riders line up in the middle of the ring so that everyone can have a turn cantering, another horse got too close to Leigh (she wears a red warning ribbon in her tail, but not everyone knows what it signifies). Leigh started kicking and took off. Zoe remained calm, dismounting at a canter. As she dismounted I heard the judge say to Zoe, "Good riders make wise choices - that was a wise choice." Zoe was determined to finish the class, so she asked the judge if she could still take her turn to canter, although she knew that she didn't have any chance of placing well. I was so proud of her!
Once Zoe realized she had to keep Leigh away from the other horses in the ring, her remaining classes were much smoother. She placed second in Walk/Trot/Canter Command and first in the trail class - a great day!
