Playground Etiquette

Yesterday Zan and I were waiting/playing at a playground for Zoe while she rehearsed with her singing group.  At first we were the only ones there, but soon a girl about Zan's age arrived.  They immediately started playing together.  I overheard their beginning dialogue:

Zan:   What's your name?
Sophie:  Sophie.  What's your name?
Zan:   My name is Zan. Spelled Z..A..N.  Nice to meet you.

First,  I was so proud of him for initiating the introduction and then to hear him say, "Nice to meet you!"  It sounded so grownup.  Second, I love the way he spells his name when he meets someone new.  He does it  automatically now because so many people misunderstand him.  They think he is saying "Dan" or "Sam."

A little while later a few more kids arrived.  They were immediately included in the game.  The exact nature of the game was a little hard to figure out - something with pirates, swords and bad guys.  Kids at the playground play together as though they've always known each other and as if they'll see each other again soon.

what a sweet story. i once thought that, too, about how children play with eachother as if they've always known them and will see eachother again...
makes you wonder why adults can't do that as well as children? kids teach us so much, and that's why i'm thankful to have a much younger brother...keeps me on my toes!!!
also, just like zan did in this story, until this very day i have to spell my name for people, because it sounds like heidi instead ivy :)
